The party headed up to the courtyard. Mavis asked for a vote on whether to leave or not. Most wanted to leave outright, but some wanted to make sure nobody really needed to be rescued. Caelesti cast two more Fly spells, targeting Mavis and Talon; Carric could fly as an eagle. The party flew up to look in through the windows of the tower. They saw nothing that made them want to stay.

Carric recalled scrying Arkhan and looked around for the mountains that he had seen behind Arkhan. The party had crossed the same mountains on there way back from The Blot. Carric believed the party was close.

Since it had become night, the party set up camp. The discovered more animated branches, but did nothing with them.

The next day, Carric cast another Scry. He saw the pombi, but no significant landmarks. He and Tan Kuran took flight to scout the area for it.

While Carric was scouting, Mavis called out that something large was approaching. Caelesti cast Fly on herself, and a pombi lumbered into view.

Caelesti cast Haste on the party. The pombi lumbered forward; some noticed a glint of gold around its neck. Yoshi punched it, stunning it briefly. Talon tried to communicate with it mentally, but only detected its thoughts for food. Mavis grabbed at the chain around the pombi's neck, but couldn't remove the necklace. Yoshi went into a flurry of blows, striking it several times, but not stunning it. The pombi clawed at Mavis, damaging her badly, and holding her tight. Yoshi tried to grab at the necklace again, hoping that its removal might return Arkhan to his human form. He grabbed it, but didn't pull it off. Caelesti stepped forward, grabbed the chain, and successfully pulled it off; the pombi turned into a man (still hugging Mavis). Talon cast Cure Serious Wounds on Mavis.

Arkhan came to, and the battle ended. The group went back to camp to tell stories. Arkhan said that his brother and harpies beguiled and drugged him, and sent him to a shadowy place. There he became overwhelmed by shadows. Bartelmy told him to put on the necklace to be saved, and that's all he remembered. The party said that the necklace turned him into a pombi. When it was pulled off, he returned to his normal form.

The party explained how they stopped the false Chamferton and the harpies, and recovered the faces and the wand. Caelesti said he stole her face, and Carric's. Arkhan said he only stole the faces from evil people, but his brother did not have his qualms. The party said that his brother and a harpy were executed.

The party escorted Arkhan out of Schlaizy Noithn, and he was sure he could make it home from there. Talon then communicated with Brianna about finding the portal in the Fire Hills. Brianna asked the party to camp out in the hills, and she and Nessey will find them.

The next day, Brianna and Nessey flew into sight on Phantom Steeds. When they landed, after Nessey recovered from her flight, Nessey explained that she was going back to the School of the Gamesmen with her parents' permission. Brianna said she would help the party find the portal home.

They all entered the Fire Hills. Brianna said to follow her directly and walked out onto an invisible bridge high about a river of lava. Caelesti cast Fly in case it were needed, but walked out onto the bridge. The mules had to be blindfolded before being led across. The path led to a cave. The portal was in the cave. The party crossed through and returned home.

Nessey's notes

Scribe: Carric, who claims to adore women and be quite the ladies man, tramples the prone and steaming Talon in his rush to escape
Scribe: Yoshi, the chivalrous monk, stops and helps up the lady and dusts off her hot wet chain mail bikini. She leans against him. Acts faint. "Thank you, strong, handsome man."
Scribe: She bats her wet lashes at him.
Scribe: Talon wants to go upstairs and see what is there?
Scribe: We take a vote and only mavis and carric want to leave now.
Scribe: Talon suggest we go to courtyard and all fly and look into the upstairs through the windows.
Scribe: On the way out, we pass the room with the cushy chairs and there are 5 as before and an inviting fire.
Scribe: We proceed out to courtyard and can see stars overhead.
Scribe: It was gathering dusk when we entered.
Scribe: We see the pile of heads at far end. They formed themselves into a pyramid.
Scribe: Caelesti has to cast fly on us.
Scribe: Carric asks if Caelesti has enough flies for all of us. Caelesti and Yoshi are already flying.
Scribe: Caelesti, I don't know if I have enough fly spells yet.
Scribe: Talon - Yoshi, can you carry me, I feel so faint, ohhh, ohhh...
Scribe: Mavis requests a fly spell and gets one.
Scribe: Carric and Mavis and us go over and look at pyramid of heads.
Scribe: Mavis kicks them and hurts her foot.
Scribe: Pyramid sways and flattens out into carpet and then heads bounce and say "help us, help us."

Scribe: We all fly up. We peer into windows.
Scribe: We see dusty and not rooms. Some have melted/saggy furniture.
Scribe: All rooms seem weird and organic.
Scribe: Talon - I wonder who lives here?
Scribe: Carric - What? The place itself it the thing itself.
Scribe: We return to the mules.
Scribe: Yoshi sets Talon down gently.
Scribe: "oh, Yoshi, so fly so well."
Scribe: Talon - I felt so safe and warm in your arms.
Scribe: Yoshi - I do wonder if you are a suitable adventuring companion then.

Scribe: Talon asks about distance between mountain and Pombi when Carric scried it.

Scribe: We both know that Pombis wander far and wide.
Scribe: We have had small to no fires over night while we have been here.
Scribe: While inside the circle of light/hut and near the fire, our shoe laces are safe from tampering.
Scribe: For some reason Mavis thinks Yoshi is accusing her of being an animal not a person.
Scribe: Perhaps it was because Talon asked Carric to do speak with animals and ask if there is a Pombi nearby?
Scribe: Talon - do Pombis have dens or caves, etc?
Scribe: CArric says not worth it until we get closer to the mountain we left a week ago.
Scribe: We get entangled and the road moves backwards so we don't walk on the road. The bushes look at us.
Scribe: We head back towards the mountain.
Scribe: Branches ensnare us and have eyes and when Carric tries to speak to it, the branch grows wings and flies away.
Scribe: In the morning, after camp, we head towards the mountain again. Perhaps Carric prays for a scry spell that afternoon.
Scribe: He gets one. He then seeks a natural pool of water.

Scribe: Eventually Carric and Tan Kuran return to camp and find an extra person there with us.
Scribe: Carric lands and turns back into person.
Scribe: Arkhan - Ahhh, a Shifter.
Scribe: Yoshi says Carric is a good Shifter.
Scribe: Talon sympathizes.
Scribe: with Arkahs point of view on not being able to pin down Shifters - and them sneaking and rushing.
Scribe: Arkhan didn't know it was named Lake of Faces yet. It has only 18 faces before.
Scribe: Yoshi says taking faces is evil cause it ages the victim.
Scribe: Arkahn says taking a face does not age the person. He doesn't know that asking a question of face ages it either.
Scribe: Yoshi says Arkhan's face was there too and they were surprised it lived after so many questions.
Scribe: Arkhan says he is the High Wizard Champferton, as that is more impressive name than Arkhan. He is a high wizard as his castle is high in the mountain.
Scribe: It was a title or a different name he gave himself when he progressed in his profession to sound more impressive.
Scribe: He can't explain Wizardry to us nor to gamesmen. Wizards' talents are not in the book. They can play games or not as they choose.
Scribe: He says his brother overwhelmed him with Harpies.
Scribe: Carric says we have rid the castle of brother and Harpeis.
Scribe: Arkhan is glad.
Scribe: Arkhan says he was rescued by Bartlebe. She somehow took the attention of Shadow away from him and he remember no more.
Scribe: He was investigated Shadow. He has not figured it out yet. But it is a major force in this world and not benificient. He was beng overwhelmed by it and Bartleby came up and she handed him necklace and said it would save him from being shadow eaten. He remembers nothing else.
Scribe: Yoshi says Bartleby's ban must be the necklace, or says Carric.
Scribe: Bartleby is a Dervish. All dervishes are women.
Scribe: She saved him in his time of need. How she knew he needed to be saved, he doesn't know.
Scribe: Carric explain where he is. Land of the Shifters.

Scribe: Arkhan is surprised and yet not surprised.
Scribe: We vow to seek out a waterfall.
Scribe: Arkhan wants to head back to his castle.
Scribe: Yoshi invites him to rest and have a meal with us first.
Scribe: He asks about his brother.
Scribe: and the harpie who was with him.
Scribe: Yoshi - we have destroyed them both.

Scribe: He obviously mistakens us for gamesmen.
Scribe: Arkhan thought he might have found The Shadow Tower.

Scribe: Arkhan says they are called that because they live in the Shadow Lands, but that has nothing to do with "Shadow."
Scribe: He can recall that there is a shadow bell in the shadow tower and day has not rung for too long.

Scribe: There is the day bell and the shadow bell. At dawn the day bell used to ring and sends it sound rushing forth over all the land and day would occur. Shadow bell rings and night falls.
Scribe: Wizards have been investigating this for centuries.
Scribe: Caelesti - you are centuries old?
Mavis: I and other Wize-ards have been investigating this for centuries.
Scribe: Arkhan - you do not listen well, young lass.
Scribe: Caelesti - I could have been a Wizard except I don't like to study.
Scribe: Yoshi - do you need an escort back to your castle?
Scribe: He could like escort to edge of mountains outside this area.
Scribe: Yoshi says we would be happy to do that, looks meaningfully at Talon.

Scribe: Perhaps they are experimenting to test their art and some forget what it is to be human and stay that way. Non Shifters come here at their peril.
Scribe: Carric says in that case, we should get out of here forthwith.
Scribe: We speak of our homeland.
Scribe: We hike and chat more.
Scribe: We speak of portal in Firehills and the real Champferton toasts our doom.
Scribe: We lead him to the hill to the north the next day.
Scribe: We see him on his path home.
Scribe: We wonder how we are going to get to portal.
Scribe: Talon calls Brianna with her bracelet.
Scribe: Talon sends Brianna a message and says we are on verge of Firehills and need help with finding portal.
Scribe: We are on north boundary of Land of Shifters.
Scribe: Brianna tells us to camp out in the hills.

Scribe: Talon relays this to the others.
Scribe: CArric leads us north to the hills and finds a good camping spot.
Scribe: Talon relates that Brianna is returning with Nessey.

Scribe: Nessey and Brianna hop off. Nessey looks green around the gills.
Scribe: Nessey gushes about her future and how happy she is to see her friends and about her future at the Gameswoman school.

Scribe: YOshi says he wants us all to stay together.
Scribe: Caelesti says she wants to continue our conquest against evil.
Carric: Your head no longer needs to be attached!
Scribe: Nessey says she would like to stay with her friends, but if she turns up in Rowanesmeade, her mother will marry her to a 79 year old man who is all wrinkled and smells funny. But if she goes to school, then she can learn how to dance and dress and win friends and influence people and perhaps become a gameswoman queen again.
Scribe: Brianna explains she is taking Nessey back to the school.
Scribe: Brianna leads us to the north and later into the Firehills.
Scribe: north, then east
Scribe: Talon embraces Brianna and shows off her hut that night.
Scribe: We choose watches. Talon on 1st with Brianna.
Scribe: Talon and Brianna go to sleep in same bedroll.
Scribe: Nothing disturbs us.
Scribe: We proceed next day.
Scribe: Brianna leads us and tells us to follow her exactly regardless of evidence of our eyes.
Scribe: We see volcanic activity.
Scribe: Rocks shooting out and lava.
Scribe: Looks dangerous but Brianna leads us well.
Scribe: Come to a valley that appears to be completely filled with lava.
Scribe: Brianna says Follow Me.
Scribe: Caelesi - what into the lava!!
Scribe: She heads over edge of path and steps out but doesn't fall over edge.
Scribe: She appears to be walking on air above lava somehow.
Scribe: We follow her.
Scribe: We are scared. But we follow, except Caelesti who flies.
Scribe: Those of us walking find it solid. An invisible bridge.
Scribe: Caelesti walks now.
Scribe: We make it over chasm to side of hill.
Scribe: Brianna leads us to the cave, which is relatively stable being in the side of a dormant volcano. She says this portal will take us back into our own lands - to the east of Rowansmeade - several days journey.
Scribe: Nessey blathers on and on.
Scribe: Talon holds Brianna's hand. Must we part now.
Scribe: Brianna - we will be reunited again soon enough.
Scribe: Talon takes Brianna aside and asks for advice about Yoshi.
Scribe: She says he might be a girlly man or a dull knive in the drawer.
