Caelesti's notes

Date

Log

One of the strange dogs let out a loud howl, which woke all the sleepers. The other charged Yoshi and bit him. Mavis stepped next to Yoshi and struck the dog with a well-placed hit.

The dog that howled attacked Carric, tripping Carric. Caelesti stood up and cast Sleep on the dogs, affecting neither. The dog on Yoshi howled again and attempted to retreat. Mavis struck it with another well-placed stab, but it got away. Yoshi stood. Carric turned into a black bear, healing some damage as he shape-changed, and stood up. The dog bit him as he stood, and tripped him again. Mavis moved to flank the dog on Carric, and stabbed it sneakily. Talon started singing in her tent.

The dog on Carric bit him again and moved out from being flanked. Caelesti cast Magic Missiles on the one that retreated, dropping it. Yoshi activated his Chronocharm of the Horizon Walker for extra speed, moved to the remaining dog, and punched it. Carric, remaining prone, bit the dog. Mavis struck the dog twice, dropping it.

Talon poked her head out of the tent to see if it was safe. She offered healing and, looking in her Tome of Worldly Memory, determined that the dogs were shadow mastiffs.

Carric commented that the party had run into other shadow creatures in the area, shadar-kai. Mavis wanted to hear the story. Carric told how they had killed some small fey, and the party tracked them to a cave. They captured the two shadar-kai, which were wearing strange bracelets. The party removed one of the bracelets, and the creature screamed and died. They tied the other one up, but it escaped in the night.

Talon wanted to look for the portal to the shadow plane that these creatures must have passed through. The party agreed to look for it in the morning.

The rest of the night was uneventful. In the morning, after spell recovery, the party followed the shadow mastiff tracks. They were easy to follow in the snow. The party passed near the shadar-kai cave, but the tracks continued to a different cave.

The party approached slowly. Talon cast Detect Magic to help locate the portal. Yoshi lit a lantern, and the party continued forward. The cave twisted for hundred feet, ending at the portal.

Talon suggested collapsing the cave so that shadow creatures could no longer pass through and hurt innocent people. Caelesti said she wanted to see the plane of shadow and stepped through. Yoshi tied a rope around himself, handed the other end to someone, and also stepped through. Yoshi found Caelesti just on the other side of the portal taking in her surroundings, looking around and touching things. When she had her fill, she was willing to leave with Yoshi.

Talon continued to press the issue to collapse the tunnel. Carric didn't like the idea. Caelesti didn't think that the party had the means. Yoshi wanted to consult his temple. Caelesti suggested merely concealing the portal from both sides with a pile of rocks. Mavis wondered what rocks looked like on the shadow side, so Caelesti re-entered the cave to get some shadow-side rocks. Mavis and Yoshi chased after her. She collected some rocks, and the three returned to the others.

The rocks were the same, so the Carric, Yoshi, Mavis, and Caelesti gathered large and small rocks from nearby caves and rock slides. They created a rock pile to conceal the portal on both sides. Just as they were finishing up, an undead shadow attacked.

Caelesti was surprised. The shadow missed Yoshi. Yoshi used his ki strike, but missed. Carric used his Gloves of the Starry sky to cast Magic Missiles at the shadow. Caelesti also cast Magic Missiles at it, and stepped back to give Yoshi some room. The shadow struck Yoshi, damaging his strength. Yoshi struck at it many times, missing each time. Mavis moved into Caelesti's spot, stabbed the shadow, and destroyed it.

The party completed their rubble pile, and headed to the shadar-kai to spend the night in shelter. Carric cast Lesser Restoration on Yoshi, restoring some of his lost strength. The night was uneventful. Yoshi gained a little more strength over night.

In the morning, the party headed back to the road leading to Oakrill. Carric sent Tan Kuran to fly around looking for Kirin, spotting him hiding along the side of the road. The party circled around him and advanced from all sides.

Kirin fled from Carric, running into Yoshi. Yoshi swung at Kirin and missed. Caelesti shot Magic Missiles at him. Mavis moved to flank, and dropped him with a well-placed stab with a silver dagger. Yoshi bound his wounds, and Caelesti tied him up and searched him.

The party traveled toward Rowansmeade over the next three days, staying at familiar inns at night, and keeping Kirin unconscious so that he could not turn into a rat, to escape his bonds, and flee. The party returned to Yoshi's temple, debriefed, and collected their rewards.

Mavis is making all her hits just fine.

Talon opens tent flap a little so others can hear her music better.

Well, no. perhaps it was Caelesti's Magic Missiles.

Yoshi activate chronocharm of Horizon walker and moves 1/2 speed as swift action up next to Monster 2.

Talon rolls K - Planes (d20 + 9): [16 + 9] = 25
We check knowlege of planes, with my book my score = 30

Talon: this is a shadow mastiff - outsider from plane of shadow!! I wonder how it got here.

Bearic becomes Carric and says the previous party found shadar-kai in this area previously.

Talon to Carric - do you think there might be a portal around here?

Carric shakes his head.

Talon: Well, I think there must be a portal around here somewhere

Talon rolls K - Planes (d20 + 9): [15 + 9] = 24
I do knowledge of plane to see what I know about shadar-kai.
I know they are fey from plane of shadow just like the shadow mastiff

Mavis - I think that makes sense. That's why I was trying to get your companions to tell the story.

Yoshi remembers now and says they found dead elf and tracked it and found dead grigs and when encountered shadar-kai they fought with chains. Tracked them to a cave and captured two, but one escaped. Removed arm band from one who shuddered and died.

Talon says we need a "find portal" spell and to go back to the area of the cave where the party previously camped with shadar-kai prisoners.
Talon does not have such a spell herself. Unfortunately no one else in party does either.

Talon - could we find them with a "detect magic" sweep?

Mavis - portals are magic, but perhaps Carric should try tracking where the creatures came from - in the morning - before we use a spell.

Talon: Oh, good idea! Then Talon and goes back into her tent and back to sleep.

Carric, as himself or as Bearic? - stays on watch. Mavis too. The Bane Moon is not full tonight, is just a sliver in the sky.

Yoshi recovers hit points from his magic bedroll - then will be at full in the morning.

DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [6] = 6 DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [3] = 3

At the end of his watch, Carric climbs into his magic bedroll - which smells of "old spice" rather than lavender.

Yoshi takes third watch as he has to get up then anyway to pray.
He does a spot check and successfully sees the sun come up.

Yoshi wants to skin mastif creatures for proof or profit.
Talon rolls K - Nature - T (d20 + 9): [13 + 9] = 22
Talon suggests we skin and take back as evidence of our success, but reports the skins are not of monetary value.

Carric then tracks to see where the Beasts came from
Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [10 + 15] = 25

Tintin is loaded up with the mastif skins.
He winnies nervously

Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [13 + 15] = 28
Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [9 + 15] = 24
Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [5 + 15] = 20
Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [18 + 15] = 33
Carric follows 2 pair of tracks.
Still fresh enough for him to follow.
Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [2 + 15] = 17
Carric thinks that off to the right is shadar-kai cave, but tracks continue north. Then the tracks duck into a smaller cave.

Talon steps up and does Detect Magic into the shadowy cave. Yoshi steps in to protect Talon. Yoshi has a head lamp when we need it. Talon detects a bunch of magic on Yoshi.

Yoshi turns on watch lamp. He and Talon move further into the cave. The passage goes right and down.

Tintin remains outside while the rest of the party follows Talon and Yoshi through the cave. At limit of Yoshi's illumination, he sees a strangely flat wall. Looks like just inky black space - not really a wall.

Talon - I think we found the portal. Why don't we collapse the cave, after we get out, of course, to prevent more Shadow creatures from wandering through and murdering innocent people.

Caelesti - might we want to get to Shadow plane ourselves? I'd like to go through and see what's there!

Yoshi - wait! wait!

Without waiting, Caelesti steps through, impulsively, and disapears from our view.

Talon - we should have tied a rope around her.

Yoshi takes out a rope and hands one end to Carric and then walks through the portal to retrieve Caelesti.

On the shadow plane, Yoshi and Caelesti find themselves in another, even smaller cave. Everything is dark and shadowy.

Yoshi speaks and Caelesti is surpised she can hear him cause everything else seems so hush.

Yoshi - this is very interesting, but not very wise. Let us go back and talk before we come here again.

Caelesti says - I just wanted to see it before anyone collapsed the cave.

She wants to experience this plane. She wants to peak out from cave opening.

Yoshi goes with Caelesti to mouth of cave. Yoshi holds Caelesti's hand - both to comfort her and keep her from running off.

Outside, they see that the sky is grey, no sun, no stars. See same topography as material plane - except twisted and with strange vegetation and shadowy creatures moving far away.

Caelesti is finally ready to go back. Yoshi and she follow the rope back through to portal to our plane. Since this is a bi-directional portal, the rope is still intact.

Carric - I wonder if we can block off this portal instead of caving in the whole cave?

Talon - I say we just cave in the whole tunnel cause that's safest for preventing more Shadow Plane monsters from getting through.

Carric - I'm not sure we can do that. This is rock and stuff.

Talon - I have Thunder sticks, Caelesti and you have Magic Missiles. Let's try.

Caelesti says she feels sorry for creatures who come through by accident. Perhaps we can camouflage the portal somehow so shadow critters don't wander in.

Talon says that won't fool the shadar-kai and they know the portal is there.

Carric checks for tracks to see if any shadar-kai have passed this way recently.

Carric rolls Track (d20 + 15): [19 + 15] = 34
Carric can't find much in the way of tracks under a month old, though it is hard to tell after we all have walked around, messing up the signs.

Before, Yoshi had agreed with Talon that it is best to collapse the cave, to protect innocent travelers on our place. But now Yoshi wavers. He doesn't want to make a decision his temple might disagree with. He wants to leave the portal open the way it is until after he can go back and consult with the authorities at the temple.

On the way back, Yoshi wants to capture Kieran.

Talon insists the portal is a menace and that innocent lives are in danger the longer we leave it open. Talon is very concerned about lives lost. The others don't seem to care.

Caelesti argues that here are monsters on our own plane anyway, just as dangerous, so dangerous Shadow monsters must be okay.

Talon is unable to follow Caelesti's reasoning.

Talon says - Why increase the dangers to the innocent? You want to invite all the bad monsters from all the planes to OUR plane - adding greater dangers to our world? Why? I don't get it!!

The DM, during a page fault, comments that:
Insufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.

Caelesti run back to the Shadow Plane, followed this time by Carric.

Carric takes Caelesti back to our side. They remain alone together in the deep, dark cave while the rest of us go outside, into the light, to talk further.

Carric rolls Kno Planes (d20 + 3): [11 + 3] = 14
Then Carric and Caelesti come out to talk to us.
Talon rolls K - Planes (d20 + 9): [16 + 9] = 25

Talon makes her knowledge of planes check and reminds people that the Shadow Plane is home to shadowy undead - known as Shadows. Very dangerous place!

Caelesti is nevertheless very taken by the Shadow Plane (despite its dangers) and demands we cover the portal on other side (shadow side) somehow to prevent creatures from wandering through, but enable her to get through again when she wants to.

Yoshi suggests putting rock in 5ft portal opening.

Caelesti goes back to Shadow cave yet again and picks up rocks and bring them back to our side, to see what they look like in this world.
The rocks look the same as those on our plane. So Caelesti suggests blocking the shadow end with rocks from our side.

Talon tries to point out that that won't fool intelligent humanoid like the shadar-kai, but is over ruled. Talon gets fed up. Throws up her hands.

Talon - Fine! Go for it!

Caelesti launches a campaign to collect large rocks. Yoshi helps, as do Mavis and Carric.

Talon gets out a flask of hot herbal tea and gets out rations and sits down to have lunch with Tintin.

The rest of the party collects rocks and boulders. They make a large heap by cave entrance. Talon then allows them to use Tintin to carry rocks into the cave to the portal area.

Talon is happy that this might at least stop random creatures from wandering through the portal and killing innocent people, though still thinks it will not stop more intelligent types who already know of the existence of the portal.

DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [6] = 6
DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [5] = 5
DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [2] = 2
DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [1] = 1

Rocks are piled up on the shadow plane side. There is a space for us to get through portal to shadow side to remove the rocks later if we need to or if Caelesti wants to...to locate her vacation home there or something. :) Then the group starts another walls of rocks on our side of the portal - I guess so monsters from our plane don't wander into the shadow side.

After 4 hours, the walls are almost done.

Carric rolls d20: [10] = 10
Yoshi rolls d20: [15] = 15

Mavis rolls 1d20 (d20): [7] = 7
Mavis yells - "Yoshi - right next to you!"

Caelesti is surprised.

Yoshi - "Everyone - back up!"

Mavis walks through Carric's space to back up and draw her weapon. Carric then backs up and draws his weapon. Yoshi delays.

Mavis rolls 1d20 (d20): [4] = 4

Caelesti still stands stunned with surprise.

Creature swips at Yoshi with incorporeal touch.
Yoshi dons magic fists, 50% miss chance

Yoshi rolls Attack:Unarmed, Single (d20 + 4 + 2 + 1): [1 + 4 + 2 + 1] = 8

Caelesti - still oblivious - looks with fascination at the pretty shadows.

Mavis is next. She says she is good in melee, not full of magic = sorry.

Carric is next. Carric has darkvision. Carric uses special gloves and fires magic missiles at the humanoid gloom creature.
No chance of failure to hit with Gloves of Starry Sky doing Magic Missiles.

Carric rolls Magic Missiles (5d4 + 5): [(1 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 1) + 5] = 15
Okay, not really that many missiles. Some are a figment of Carric's excited imagination.

But now, Caelesti is no longer surprised.
Caelesti rolls Spell (Magic Missiles) (d4 + 1): [2 + 1] = 3
Caelesti rolls Spell (Magic Missiles) (d4 + 1): [2 + 1] = 3

Caelesti has taken a 5ft step back and done magic missiles of her own for 6 pnts

Mavis rolls Mavis Rapier or Bow Damage (d6 + 3): [4 + 3] = 7
She does well and hits for 7pnts and the gloomy humanoid shadow is gone.

They party finishes their rock walls on both sides. Looks good from our side. Yoshi is less helpful than before on moving boulders cause of his reduced srength, but still does a good job.

They return to mouth of cave.

Talon - well, you all done?

Caelesti - Yup, hopefully nothing bad will go through portal and we can use it later if we need to.

Talon - it took you a while.

Caelesti - there were a lot of rocks.

Yoshi - and we ran into a nasty shadow creature in the cave by the portal.

Talon - See! I told you there were dangerous creatures there!

Yoshi - Agreed. Let's go capture Kieran now.

Mavis - how are we allowed to subdue him? ;)

Talon - why don't we Sleep Kieran?

Mavis and Caelesti both say they knows ways of subduing Kieran forever!

Yoshi - it is not justice to kill it when we can bring it back for questioning. My plan is to keep him alive but unconscious

Talon - why don't we tie Kieran onto the back of a black bear, ;) Carric?

Carric - I don't want a male wererat tied to me - only a female werebear.

We travel a little farther and then camp in the previous shadar-kai cave for the night. The sun is setting as we make camp. There are no signs that the cave has been reinhabited.

We set up the usual watches.

DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [4] = 4
DM rolls 1d6 (d6): [4] = 4

Nothing happens that night except we get lots of rest and Yoshi recovers some STR and Carric does lesser restoration on Yoshi for +1.
Yoshi only down 1 STR now.

We head out early in the morning and look for Kieran at his usual spot.
Carric suggests we encircle Kieran when we see him.

Carric advances with his silver dagger and says "Come peacefully with us."

Kieran runs into the arms of Yoshi.

Yoshi wants to do non-lethal pummeling.
Yoshi is concerned about possible need for silver to do non-lethal subdual damage. Decides he can't bipass damage reduction without silver. So Yoshi puts his fists away and uses his silver weapon. Steps up 5ft and whacks Kieran in the shins.

Yoshi rolls Attack:Weapon, Single (d20 + 4 + 2): [1 + 4 + 2] = 7 Inadequae to subdue.
Yoshi shouts - "yeild!" at Kieran.

Caelesti rolls Spell (Magic Missiles) (d4 + 1): [4 + 1] = 5
Caelesti does Magic Missile on Kieran
Caelesti rolls Spell (Magic Missiles) (d4 + 1): [2 + 1] = 3
8 pnts on Kieran total.

DM rolls Mavis Rapier or Bow Attack #1 (d20 + 10): [19 + 10] = 29
DM rolls Mavis Rapier or Bow Attack #1 (d20 + 10): [20 + 10] = 30
DM rolls Mavis Rapier or Bow Sneak Damage (d6 + 3 + 2d6): [4 + 3 + (1 + 2)] = 10

Mavis steps up and does criical damage with her silver weapon. She takes Kieran unconscious, but still alive, surprisingly and happily in Talon's view.

Mavis steps back.
Tallon offers Tintin to carry unconscious Kieran.
No one has rope use to bind Kieran expertly.
Caelesti has best DEX for tying ropes.
Kieran could turn into a Dire Rat if he becomes conscious.
Caelesti rolls d20: [17] = 17
DM rolls 1d20 (d20): [3] = 3

We make it to the Wagon Wheel Inn without incident.
Caelesti wants to search Kieran for her outfit or other equipment.
Carric takes away Kieran's weapon.
Kieran really doesn't have much.

Talon - poor little guy, he has to thieve to make a living because he's discriminated against as a wererat.

Carric - Talon, you should start a non-profit to aid the causes of underpriveleged were-creatures.

Talon - yes, good idea! I think I will!!

We get to the Inn a little after dark.
Carric asks if the Innkeeper has a prison?

Keeper - Certainly not! And I cleaned up the water in the basement. A boys room and a girls room, then? 3 in each?

Yes, we go for that. Kieran sleeps with Carric and Yoshi.
Talon trusts Mavis now and will sleep in same room with her.
Kieran is only gaining 1 hp per night. So still unconsious.

We need to think about equipment to buy before trip to Barbarian Country.

We will gain 500 gp each and 100 each for Kieran each when we return to Rowansmeade.

As anticipated, we get nothing (gp) for the mastif skins - just used as proof that we defeated the attackers.

Takes us 3 days to get back.
