Here are all of the 1e and 2e Dargas adventures. We've played in the
City of the Spider Queen since we
converted to V3 and that page tabulates subsequent adventure numbers.
An "adventure" is defined to be "something which has a distinct
adventure number assigned to it."
Initially, a new adventure number was assigned for each individual trip
to the dungeon - Cobepar or the Temple of Elemental Evil. Since the DM
wanted time to pass in his world, he generally advanced time by at least
one week between "adventures," or more, if characters needed to train.
Later, when we started playing modules that couldn't be completed in a
single sally into a dungeon, a new adventure number was only assigned
when XP was awarded: generally at a "break" in the module during which
the characters had returned to town for training. Many evenings of
gaming might be included in a single adventure number.
We often had multiple parties adventuring in parallel. To make that
parallelism easier to understand, the following table is sorted by
"Dargas date" rather than by "adventure number."

Upon spying the two Dragons, Zeight calls over Elvira to
share the benefit of his scroll of Protection from Dragon
Breath. As he is unrolling it, he, Elvira, and Freddie have
Dragon Acid breathed upon them. Most of Zeight's
possessions dissolve -- and he looks very surprised as
he stands naked, save for his scroll. Elvira looks very
grim until she realizes that Freddie still lives.
Meanwhile, Alphonso uses his Wand of Wonder to
shower the Dracoliches with gems and butterflies.

4 Vegepygmies |
Called by a Sage to acquire rare plants for him, the
party is suprised to not find the Sage at home. His
servant, a Myconid, believes him to be trapped in his
own greenhouse. We rescue him from his newly
acquired Vegepygmies. Nick gets caught in his own
Web and watches helplessly as untrapped Vegepygmies
move through the Web towards him. He is saved by his
companions, but concludes that Free Action is a fine
idea for a Web-wielding wizard.

travels to Mansfield, where he trades it to his high level
friends for lots and lots of minor magic items. He is also

the rest of the party passes through a teleportation
chamber. While exploring the new region, we find that
our "luck" has been enhanced: we have all acquired a
limited ability to "reroll" unfavorable die rolls. This
comes in handy when we each individually encounter
an aspect of the Goddess of Fate and are asked to
choose our destiny. Without the rerolls, 1 of 8 would
succeed in the challenge we were offered. With the
rerolls, 5 of 8 succeeded. The favorably fated all
acquire boons and a golden thread as a souvenir; the
ill-fated acquire detriments. None remembers the
adventure.

maze of clown faces -- and then some. Jacques is
cured of his STR loss and permanently gains 4 more
points of strength. The other party members all get
similar gains in stats, HP, or levels. We also find our

meet the Goddess of Fate. 6 of 7 pass the test; 1 only
by the power of a magical item. The party returns to

Pietr and Henry slay them all. We eventually manage

Second most sobering discovery: Ulgi and Zeight used
guilt to get Tebryn to Identify a Scarab of Death --
which killed him, of course.

Tigerblade. The diamonds are split evenly. The three
unbreakable bottles are distributed. And the intriguing
IOU, inscribed "return to bearer", for one "Rod" causes
much speculation. Tebryn researches how to make a
Girdle of Fire Giant Strength for Zeight. While we
debate how to acquire the exotic materials needed for
the construction, Vandis Communes with Shina-Tsu-Hiko
to try and find out about the Rod. Discovering that it is
a Rod of Resurrection, is currently possessed by a being
who probably will not honor the IOU, and is on an Inner
Plane, we hire Walter to find more for us. After a mere
five days, he informs us that the Rod was last seen in a
clan of Fire Giants on the Dark Continent near Victoria
Falls. What luck! We need Fire Giant sweat for the
girdle. The rod apparently has left this plane, but we
determine to travel to visit the giants to find out more.

The party travels to a valley in the Pyranees where they
are bombarded from above by giants. Taking refuge in
a small cave, Cyrril rolls back a boulder - and releases
a family of Gorgons, who turn all except Zeight and
Cyrril into stone before being themselves slain. The
giants approach to see what was up with their pets and
are slain by the doughty pair. Making a crude travais,
the pair trudge slowly back towards Mansfield,
dragging their three stony companions. Three maidens
join up - and turn into hags that night. When they and
their Ogres are slain, the tired warriors are rescued by
Tebryn, who, having spied the sorry band in his Crystal
Ball, Teleports in, and returns to Mansfield with
everybody. The stoned adventurers all survive the
transition back into flesh - except for Ivan, who also
fails his Resurrection. Two purchased Limited Wishes
allow him to shrug off that misfortune - and the second
failed Resurrection as well. A sad adventure indeed -
except that Zeight has a Gorgon skin (coated with Oil of
Timelessness) to be tanned for use in his new Girdle.

A huge masked warrior emanating an aura of Fear appears
in Elvira's tavern and demands that he pass on a challenge for
Tebryn (and any he chooses to bring) to appear in Zeight's
practice field for a duel over the fate of Orga. A doughty

Spectres, and the challenger, a Death Knight. Veracity
succeeds in hitting the Death Knight with several arrows,
interrupting at least one "day spoiler" of a spell - a 20 die
Fireball! The Power Word: Kill directed at Tebryn did NOT
get interrupted, but he shrugs it off only due to his Scarab
of Protection and his one remaining "reroll". The Death
Knight looks quite disconcerted at this, but soon is
polished off by Tebryn's Lightning Bolts, having had his
Magic Resistance successfully lowered to a manageable
level by Tebryn. Meanwhile, 10 energy levels had been lost
by the various fighters before they destroyed the other
undead. Zeight and Roethan were successfully Restored;
Dirgon decided not to take the system shock risk.

Marga discovers that a book she had retained from the
Temple contains a treasure map hidden in the binding. The
notation is: "Where the fingers cross the road, enter the
valley and see a sight to make you smile" with a crude map
of southern Anglia and three unmarked dots. A cartographer
identifies one dot as Mansfield, another as Greyhawk, and
the third as unknown. The party travels to the third - and
discovers a brook running across the road in thin "fingers"
of water. We enter the valley and are ambushed by
Chimerae. All fall except Nute, who revives the other
clerics and gives them a Nap. The rest of the party is
soon revived. Entering the valley, we indeed smile at
seeing a ruined church with an intact Stained Glass
window! Our smiles fade as the Stained Glass knight
steps down, blasts us with a Prismatic Spray, and enters
battle. Within the church, a chest of treasure is guarded
by a mimic, and party goes home richly satisfied.

meal. We sail on and reach the harbor at the mouth
of the river, where we are forced to stop, due to the
falling of a fog. After we destroy some attacking
Xantravars, the fog lifts and we sail on into the channel.
Two Wind Ghosts descend and capture Cyrril, and then
spit him out into the channel. We defeat the monsters,
rescue Cyrril, and successfully land in a port town in
Frankia.

We continue to explore the locales. Traveling along a
rural road, a Glowing Woman asks us all to describe our
Religious beliefs and Observances. We answer and she
seems to lose interest and moves on to question the
next travelers. We continue. Heading out into a
swampy area, we see a beautiful tall tower. Its top
explodes before our eyes as we approach, sending
large chunks flying in three directions. We stare in
shock, briefly - and then discover that random magical
spells seem to be going off all over. The Energy Drain
that hits Cyrril and the Trap the Soul that imprisons
Veracity in a Gem are bad news, indeed! Tebryn and
Vandis succeed in Dispelling the tower tops, which are
the source of the magical effects. Upon exploring the
tower pieces, we discover that one seems to have an
intact Magical Circle in it - with some sort of Attraction
spell placed on it. We avoid it but ARE attracted to the
chest. We open all the locks, disarm all the traps, and
with much effort, including traveling back to Mansfield
for Tebryn to buy some new spells, we succeed in
removing all of the treasure. Cyrril Restored, Veracity
untrapped, we deposit Veracity back in Mansfield for
9 weeks of training and return to our Mud Ship.

corner of Iberia. The trip is not without hazard, as an
Afanc approaches and attempts to sink our Mud Ship in
its whirlpool. The Sirines that invade us later reduce
Tigerblade to idiocy. We Dispel the effect and find some
VERY fancy potions in their lair. Zeight becomes
permanently immune to to all disease ! We land in
Iberia and Tebryn Teleports back to Mansfield for
training, having reached the rank of Master Thief.

The Map of the Imagination: "Skeleton" |
Cyrril, Zeight, Eris, Vandis, Xeno |
4 Mummies, 1 Greater Mummy |
The party is staying in an Iberian town, waiting for
Tebryn and Veracity to return from training. Tebryn
fetched Xeno before leaving for good, as the party
needs a mage. We are sold, after an amusing drinking
contest, an ancient map. It is labeled (in Spanish)
"The Map of the Imagination." Consulting the Sage,
Retlaw, we figure out what location is depicted and
travel there. We discover a secret room which presents
us with a "Hangman" puzzle to solve. The clue:
"Dem Bones". The solution: "Skeleton". A potion
appears. When Zeight picks it, the party is transported
into a crypt. As the coffins open, Xeno grabs and
guzzles the potion - and appears to transform into a
Vampire! We fight off the pack of mummies, Xeno in
gaseous form throughout the battle, and reappear back
in the puzzle room. We collect our prize (a bag of gems)
and a new puzzle appears...

The Map of the Imagination: "Invisible Stalker" |
Cyrril, Zeight, Eris, Vandis, Xeno |
1 Air Elemental, 1 Earth Elemental,
1 Fire Elemental, 1 Water Elemental |
"Dust to Dust" is the clue. "Invisible Stalker" was the
the answer - but we didn't solve it correctly. Cyrril
astutely noted "Invisible", but no other characters
(even Vandis) could think of ANY monsters which were
named "Invisible xxx". Eventually, Xeno figured out
the "Stalker", but when the "S" was said twice, the
hangman completed - and we were all afflicted by a
Harm spell before being deposited in front of four
elementals. Eris was the big hero, managing to Heal
both Vandis and Xeno and then throw down Conquer
before falling. We defeat the elementals and receive
NO treasure.

Cyrril, Zeight, Eris, Vandis, Xeno (DEAD) |
2 Cloud Giants, 3 Giant 2-Headed Trolls |
The clue: "Green Rubber". The answer: "Troll". The
potion appears. Eris conjures a Fire Elemental to help
us burn trolls, but when we pick up the potion, we are
transported, sans Elemental, to a landscape where we
are standing next to a cliff, with a path up. We are
under attack! Boulders are raining down upon us. We
charge up the path and Cyrril and Zeight enter melee
with the Cloud Giants. The slower members of the party
are intercepted by Giant Two-Headed Trolls. Both Cyrril
and Xeno fall, but Eris is the hero yet again, as she casts
Heal upon Zeight, allowing him to polish off Cyrril's
Giant and then the remaining Trolls. We transport back
and discover, to our chagrin, that Xeno is dead. We
Raise him and send him into training. The rest of us
spend the time getting to know each other better.

the peculiar name of Nucum Donac thrusts a gold circlet
into Kress's hands - only to be slain by the Skeletal
Warrior coming to retrieve it. We defeat it before
Kress can become his next victim. We find a village of
Large Folk and deactivate the magical effect that
had leaked from the wizard's cave. We free a trapped
pegasus, remove the permanent Babble spell from an
ungrateful girl, and rescue 6 captives from a band of
ogres. The mayor of the village, one of the former
captives, rewards each of us with a horse. We finally
visit a village devoted to the worship of Tyr, filled with
humorless folk who arise at 5 AM.

minotaurs. The one that kept casting Maze spells was
surprising, but no harder to defeat in the end. The
treasure was a Potion of Scent Neutralization. As one,
the party thinks of Eris and presents it to her.

Traveling on to Palermo, we are startled to be met at
the docks by - Walter? He has a little shop in the town
which feels uncannily like his shop in Mansfield. He
gives us a commission: recover a weird item from the
ruined castle above town and we can keep whatever
else we find. Fighting our way through Dracolisks,
Behir, and Greater Basilisks, we find the item - which
looks different to each of us. We cannot move it -
but it communicates and says that if we sacrifice a
(humanoid) soul to it from a volunteer, it will accompany
us. This is quite the quandry! Xeno backs out of his
original offer to volunteer, but Walter finds a volunteer.
The artifact? creature? possesses the body and answers
a burning question of Tebryn's: who is Orga's avenger?
The answer: Orga herself, who was really a polymorphed
Marilith. Sobering information, indeed!

As the various Dargasian adventurers were sitting down
to breakfast, who should appear but Walter? "It's time!"
he exclaimed and *poof* - the party disappeared from
their breakfast room and reappeared elsewhere.
There also were also their old friends, Tumulo, and Igor
as well as Pot and someone who introduced himself as
"Thermo, Archwizard of Fire..." (it went on and on. His
full titles: "Thermo, Viscount of the Duchy of Elysia, in the
Principality of Northmarch, in the Kingdom of Evendarr,
Archwizard of Fire, Ambassador of the Duchy of Elysia,
Guildmaster of the Elysian Mage's Guilds, Keeper of the
Hoylean Library, Headmaster of the Academy of Arts and
Sciences in Meddlar")
We had appeared together in a small building and were
just beginning our discussion when a Delayed Blast Fireball
dropped from a pipe in the ceiling. Most of us dove out
the windows or ran out the door. Some were blasted.
Leaving the building, we discovered ourselves to be in a
completely lifeless cemetary . Entering a tomb and
avoiding many traps (except for the mirror that trapped
Tigerblade, which required Vandis to call in his favor
from Starwind, who brought THE Patriarch of Sif to
cast Remove Curse and release him), we finally had
a big battle with a whole gang of mummies. Further
investigation showed us a passage with a humming
ball which seemed to create a Wild Magic zone. The
ball's guardian, a Pit Fiend, came and creamed us - save
for the timely (so to speak) use by Tigerblade of a
Reverse Time spell.
Auguries regarding the Sphere were confusing. It would
seem that it would be beneficial to US to destroy it -
but not beneficial to the world. Self-centered
arguments not withstanding, we chose to not even
attempt to destroy it. We found our way home before
managing to disarm the traps on the fancy magical
staff and rod we had discovered - and returned home
sans items. Drat!

We are attacked by a pair of hideous many-headed
creatures during the second watch, but defeat them
handily. The next morning, while the spellcasters are
relearning spells, Cyrril and Zeight investigate the pool
in the adjacent room - and are attacked! The fighters
polish off the monster while the spellcasters continue
their study. Soon thereafter, Cyrril and Xeno get into
an altercation and, after Cyrril tosses him into the pool,
Xeno goes berserk, lashing out with spells at Cyrril and
even Hermon, an innocent bystander. After calming Xeno,

Leaving Palermo, the party sails over towards Hellas.
Landing on a small island, we spend a hospitable
evening with Nikos and Eleni, who warn us that the
island is infested with huge one-eyed giants - Cyclopes!
As we leave the next morning, we are attacked by an
even dozen of them. We prevail after a hard fight.
Tebryn slew 3 of them single-handededly with magic
while the rest of the party took on the remaining 9.
Tigerblade saved Hermon's life by un-doing his death
with a well-time Reverse Time spell. Tebryn and Hermon
Teleport back to Mansfield where they both train.

1 Displacer Beast, 1 Ghost, 1 Shambling Mound |
The party hears a rumor of strange doings far to the
north. We travel to the afflicted town and stay in the
farmhouse of an unfriendly and suspicious farmer who
"don't want no adventurers in town!" Breakfast being
served at 5:30 the next morning, the hedonistic members
of the party failed to make it and were FORCED to take
food from the larder to make their own breakfast. We
head farther north to encounter the source of the problems
- a Ghost. We defeat it, but not before four of us are
aged by its terrible grasp. Investigating farther along
the path, we slay a fearsome Displacer Beast - and the
four cubs imprint upon Box. He leaves them, rather than
bringing them back to cause havoc in civilization.
Exploration in the lair reveals a moss filled cavern with
a waterfall, behind which lurks a fearsome Shambling
Mound! We slay it, but not before Kress is smothered.
Crestfallen (so to speak), we head back towards Mansfield
- and are accosted on the road by two dozen of the
King's Watch, summoned by the vile, aggrieved wretch of
a farmer, who had so stingily refused the hungry late
risers their due breakfast. We pay him - and must also
give a substantial bribe to the Captain to avoid being
dragged off to Beryl. We arrive back in Mansfield and
have Kress raised and everyone's Youth Restored.

The party meets with Walter and Alkys and is sent on a
mission of Inter-Planar importance: we must destroy the
defective mana generator that we'd located in a prior
adventure. We are sent off - and arrive in a different
location. We fight though the various guardians and
Cyrril smashes the mana generator with his magical
morningstar - even though the image of Alkys is within it
and Vandis has grave fears about the consequences.
We appear back in Mansfield, a month later, and discover
that magic appears to have left Dargas: Mages have no
power and Clerics cannot contact their gods. The populace
panics and there is much rioting and destruction. Three
weeks later, mana starts to return and after a week, all
is back to normal. Alkys, however, is permanently gone.
Fortunately for him and Vandis, he is Cloned.

and the Water Rune) and the silver hemisphere marked
with the Earth Rune that will hold all three swords. The
missing pieces have been divined to be in the ruined
Underdark city of Dylvwyllynn. A passage to that city
has been located beneath an inn in Mansfield.
Escorted to the cellar of the Inn, the party descends.
Not too far under the city, the facade of a fortress is
found. Over the doorway hangs a curtain of dangling
skeletons. Venturing within, the party is surrounded by
Duergar and Spiders. We defeat them all and rescue

on the silver hemisphere - and 5000 GP of jewelry - if
we will perform a service for his community. We must
guard a band of miners while they collapse 10 tunnels
to the north to prevent the Beholder from destroying
more of his tribe! We agree.
The next day, we start our guard duty. We destroy two
slave-seeking bands of Kuo-toa - the fish men. We

slaves. We head back to the Deep Gnome complex to

hemisphere is being held by a group of Myconids to the
north. The next day, we head north.
Passing through underground Fungus Gardens, Yol and
Veracity cannot resist spending the day gathering
samples. This allows us to experience many encounters
with plants. Eventually, we find the Myconid enclave.
We present the King with the fungal potions we had
previously captured from the Driders and he tells us
he will give us the Silver Hemisphere - if we will just
do a little task for him... The "tentacled ones" are
brewing a dust that makes Myconids fight one another.

make it, the King will present us with the hemisphere.

We recover the Stone from a chamber filled with many
thousands of identical stones. Exploring another path, we
defeat some Ildriss and a very annoying Crypt Thing, who
repeatedly used his Wand of Magic Missiles and his Scarab of
Insanity upon us, and finally defeat two Umber Hulk Golems to
recover the Wand. The party goes down the third passage and
opens a door to find - a banshee! Kress thinks quickly and
immediately closes the door, as its mouth is twisting open to
wail - but not before both Vandis and Marga have taken fear
and run back - straight into a pit of Black Puddings. They
escape and the party takes a different route. We answer the
Gargoyle's riddle and avoid battle. Down a tube to view a
gigantic red and black lizard, sleeping. We back out and
come back, prepared to battle a red dragon. Ivan and Kress
charge forth - and are turned to stone! Vandis rescues them
and we return to Mansfield to get the warriors unpetrified.

undead, magic, and fire-using creatures. Having learned
this, we hire Walter to research the Infinity Wand, so we can
at least use it in the battle. Preparing carefully, with
protective spell and Incense, we assemble the wand and are
teleported to a shadowy arena! Orlysse, a hideous Suel Lich,
cackles with delight as we appear: "At last! You have
survived my dungeon and stand before me as slaves!" Much

another Wind Duke, appears and helps us plan. Arquestan
gives Igor a powerful Lawful sword and takes us to the
Citadel of Miska. We enter though a rift in the Cocoon of
Law, battle various Spider Fiends, and find the central
complex of Miska. While there, Igor and Vandis foolishly
unwrap a Bodak, who slays Igor. Upon entering Miska's inner
chamber, we are beset by powerful Spider Fiends - and by
Miska himself. Outmatched, we run back to Arquestan to
return to Mansfield for additional planning.
The planning proves sufficient: we returned to the Citadel
and very quickly destroyed Miska's minions. Hazen then
installed the final segment of the Rod, just as Miska
attacks! We battle until Hazen pokes him with the Rod - and
he deflates. We go to the Vale of Aaqa, are feted as heros,

9 True Ghouls, 18 Stone Guardians, 1 Huge Mongoose, 7 Ogres,
19 Teeth of Vecna (Mages), 4 Trolls |
The party is summoned to meet in a private room in Elvira's
bar. A ghostly figure, seemingly of Vandis's faith, arrives
and gives us a quest: to stop whatever it is that Iuz, "The
Corpse King" is up to in Tovag Baragu ("The Naval of
Dargas"), a place of much Vecnan activity. We are given a
Vecnan cultist's message mentioning Tovag Baragu that has a
strange sequence of numbers and also a rod with Plane Shift
and Resurrection abilities.
Tovag Baragu turns out to be a huge circle of Standing Stones
with some of them acting as strange portals. As we ponder
this, we are backstabbed in a hit and run attack. The
invisible flying Veracity follows the backstabbers and sees
them disappear through arch #3.
We follow them - and find ourselves in an alternate Tovag
Baragu, complete with strange arches. There is a tower of
Vecnans from which we are challenged. We claim that we are
enemies of Iuz and negotiate, although Igor and Tumulo are
feeling very undiplomatic at dealing with Vecnans - when we
had been backstabbed by Vecnans, seemingly. We learn that
the priestess Ugwearyl leads the cultists "in the Adytum,
further within the parallels."
While we are negotiating, we are beset by centaurs, who hate
both Vecnans and Iuzians. Upon learning that we are not
Vecnans, are opposed to Iuz and are planning on going in
deeper, their leader, Balophan, joins us.
From the comment that there are "deeper parallels", we
guess that the arches in this alternate Tovag Baragu lead
deeper in - and that the list of numbers on the cultist's
message is a key, coding which arches should be followed. We
come up with a way to interpret this which does, in fact,
lead us on a relatively "safe" path to the Adytum.
The party makes its way through the parallels and reaches the
Adytum. A strange sickly light negates invisibility. We
begin our exploration and find a laboratory. A fell
creature, a Carrion Shambler, guarded the laboratory itself;
many traps secure an inner room that contains Necrotic
substances and other peculiar items, including an "Emergency
Golem" and a "Transfer Apparatus".
We open another door, find another laboratory, similarly
equipped, guarded and trapped as before with Stone Guardians.
Igor entangles them, instructing us, as always, to "keep
your swords away from the entangled foes and my rope!" This
time, however, Veracity, overcome by Blood Lust, Suggests
that he should release them so that ALL could help in their
destruction. Igor finds this Suggestion to be completely
reasonable and releases them - and the party takes a lot of
unnecessary damage before we destroy the Stone Guardians.
That night, the weakened party is attacked by another Carrion
Shambler which engulfs Kress and Igor - and kills Balophan
and Igor. The slain wretches are Resurrected, but the night
is not yet over: while resting, we are beset by a party of
Teeth of Vecna: low-level mages. Igor entangles them and we
question them. We learn that a door we could not get
through, the Atrium, was locked down when Iuz attacked, and
that only someone wearing a relic of Vecna can pass through.
The Hand and Eye are beyond the door, but many minor relics
are on this side. We release the prisoners.
The next day, we were attempting our foray into this side of
the Adytum by attacking some Iuzian Ogres and Trolls when
another group of Teeth and Fingers (thieves) of Vecna attack
us! Igor entangles the Vecnans with his rope and we defeat
both the Iuzians and Vecnans. This time, the Centaur steps
on the entangled foes with his hooves, Igor punches them, and
Veracity Scourges them. Unfortunately, the one unentangled
mage had cast a ground zero fireball, killing himself, and
somewhat damaging some of us - but destroying Tumulo's Vest
of Giant Ears. Tumulo vows that he will never ally or
cooperate with followers of Vecna.
In the morning, we proceed down the hall that had been
guarded by the Iuzians. At the end, Kress fell prey to a
horrible trap: a pit opened and he fell onto a huge spike and
was impaled! When Igor fell on top of him, Igor had a softer
landing, but Kress was impaled even more. While we considered
what to do, a door opened behind us, and many powerful human
fighters poured out - a group of mercenaries hired by Iuz's
side. We defeat some of them, and after Veracity Levitated a
thankful Kress off the spike and Elvira sealed the door with
a Wall of Ice (for Fidelis, Vandis's Hound of Law, had told
us there was a Gorgon in the room) we made a tactical
withdrawal back to the adjacent parallel to rest and plan.
Alas, we were ambushed by four more Teeth of Vecna before we
reached cover. Killing them, we rested and planned our
further assault on the Adytum.

Die, Vecna, Die! - The Adytum: to the library |

2 Carrion Shamblers, 1 Cleric (Dopa Nu'Larseen),
5 Fighters, 6 True Ghouls, 1 Gorgon, 6 Skeletons, 1 Thief,
6 Zombies |
Upon returning to the Adytum, we headed back to the mercenary
gang and, being prepared, defeated them and their pet Gorgon
with ease: while the Thief leading the party attempted to
backstab one of us, the invisible Veracity snuck up behind
her and, holding a sword to her throat, called upon her and
her party to surrender. They did so, we took their loot, and
sent them on their way. The thief had an intriguing piece of
parchment: it claimed that there was a Tome named the
Compendium Maleficarum containing potent lore - including a
code key allowing one person into the inner temple WITHOUT a
relic! We determined to find this book, and Vandis stated
his desire to use the code word, since the thought of wearing
a relic of Vecna nauseated him.
We found a heavily damaged library with a deranged Iuzian
Cleric in it. The Tome was not there, but a Find the Path
led us to the NEXT library which contained a large book on a
pedestal, emanating Evil in dark, cloudy vapors. Quivering
with excited arousal, Veracity lovingly takes custody of the
Compendium Maleficarum. Nobody else would go near it...
Before retiring back to Mansfield to study this tome, we
explore the rest of this wing of the Adytum. We found a list
of all the reliquaries in the Adytum and which Relics they
contain. Elvira casts a Lightning Bolt at a Carrion Shambler
and we all watch with awe as it gains 10 feet in height and
another 10 HD. We defeat the enhanced undead creature and
return to Mansfield.
Veracity spends an intense week studying the Tome and learns
the code phrase, but does not share it. An unfortunate side
effect of this studying was that one of her toes withered and
fell off - and could not be restored via the normal priestly
spells. Veracity is disconcerted - and somewhat hobbled.
We perform a Commune spell to discover what we can about
Veracity's condition and about the Relics of Vecna we'd be
seeking out and learned various useful data. Veracity's
condition was an inevitable side effect of studying the Tome
and is not curable save via Divine Intervention! Prayer and
meditation would reveal the method of effecting that.
Regarding the relics, there is no specific spiritual hazard
to incorporating one, they will graft on automatically, there
is no problem with one person having more than one of them,
and if you remove one, you can regenerate back your original
body part but...not all of them are genuine.

Die, Vecna, Die! - The Adytum: collecting relics |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor, Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
1 Stone Golem |
The party returns to the Adytum and explores a large part of
the near side of temple. Eight minor relics of Vecna are
found, each in its own dangerously trapped reliquary. Igor
did all the heavy lifting involved in retrieving these items:
he uses his Whistle of Opening to open all the locks, and
flew into each lightning trapped room to retrieve each relic.
His reward is to get First Dibs on which relic he himself
will incorporate.
We clean out a few more labs of their weird Necrotic items,
and retire to the nearby safe-haven parallel to install the
Relics. We had not found the Head, Heart, or Skin of Vecna,
but deemed those to likely be fakes - or at least, highly
hazardous to install. Veracity, with her high skill level in
Anatomy and Healing is the surgeon.
To his distress, Vandis learns for the first time that
Veracity is NOT going to tell him the code phrase to pass
through the Atrium without a Relic. Veracity explains that
she herself will be using this code phrase, as she is Saving
Herself for wearing one of the Major Relics to be found in
the inner temple. After a fit of stubborness, Vandis gets
over it and agrees to incorporate a minor relic - and to be
the first subject, in fact.
Vandis is given the First Digit of Vecna - a thick, blackened
thumb.
Igor accepts the Second Digit of Vecna - the blackened index
finger.
Kress accepts the Third Digit of Vecna - the blackened middle
finger with a knifelike nail.
Balophan accepts the Molar of Vecna.
Tumulo accepts the Foot of Vecna - a blackened left foot with
protruding bones. He now walks with a slight hitch.
Elvira accepts the Right Eye of Vecna - a mummified eye ball,
wrinkled and leathery, resembling an albino prune.
Hazen accepts both the Scalp of Vecna and the (misnamed)
Incisors of Vecna - which are actually canine Fangs.
All seem reasonably happy, save for the aesthetics of the
situation, as each minor relic grants its wearer certain
powers, some of which are pretty useful!

Die, Vecna, Die! - The Adytum: through the Atrium |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor (T13+), Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
1 Cleric (Ugwaeryl), 5 True Ghouls,
1 Iron Golem (Iron Hand) |
We return to the Adytum and pass through the Atrium, the
relic bearers simply walking through the door, and Veracity
saying the pass-phrase: "May Vecna reign over all: life,
death, and everything in between will call him master!"
Inside, we find the signs of a horrific battle, replete with
hideously melted corpses. It was clear that Iuz had been
here. Off to one side, we find a shattered door, a melted
Eye-shaped golem, and a shattered, empty reliquary. We
conclude that Iuz had seized the eye. Search revealed Iuz's
rotting eye itself on the floor. Veracity claims it and
treats it with Oil of Timelessness to prevent furthur decay.
To the other side we found an intact door - and a large Iron
Hand, perched on its fingers, in front. We treated it like
an Iron Golem - and easily defeated it, just as we had
defeated many another such construction. Beyond the door was
a reliquary guarded with fiendish traps and locks.
By-passing them all, we retrieve the Hand of Vecna. Veracity
installs this in place of her own severed left hand - which
she treats with Oil of Timelessness: the Hand of Veracity.
Finally, passing through the Center Door, we encounter
Ugwearyl herself. She is incensed at seeing us bearing the
Holy Relics of Vecna and demands that we cut them off
immediately. When we refuse, she casts a Holy Word,
banishing all Good characters back to their home planes. To
her surprise, only Vandis and Balophan disappear. And that
is the last we ever saw of Balophan: who knows where HIS home
plane was?
Veracity holds up the hand of Vecna, and, not knowing what to
expect, said: "Feel the Power of my Hand." Time Stopped for
all save Veracity herself - and Kress, who was entangled by
Igor's Rope of Entanglement, out of the area of effect.
Seizing the moment, Veracity ran up to the priestess, laid
the Hand on her cheek, and said: "Now FEEL the Power of my
Hand!" The priestess instantly dies. Looking around,
Veracity realizes that nobody except Kress had seen what had
just happened. Winking at Kress, she runs back to her place
and stands there with her hand held up. When the Time Stop
ended, to the astonishment of all, the priestess slumps,
dead. All the True Ghouls in attendance on the priestess
were entangled and Veracity experiments with the hand in
various ways upon them, learning many interesting powers. We
loot the priestess and her altar. Veracity Animates the
priestess as a zombie, and we retire back to the safe-haven
parallel to wait for Vandis.
While there, the party has a little contention over the Last
Digit (pinkie) of Vecna, which we had cut from Ugwearyl's
hand. Both Elvira and Igor want it. It is agreed that Igor
will take it, but if he deems it more suitable to Elvira, he
will relinquish it. Igor installed the Finger, and then
immediately cut it off, and presented it to Elvira. Igor now
lacks the little finger of his right hand.
Vandis does return the next day, having Plane Shifted back to
Mansfield, and hired a mage to Teleport him to Tovag Baragu.
He seems pained by Veracity's slave and destroys it. We
divvy up the loot, unidentified, and return to the Adytum.

Die, Vecna, Die! - The Adytum: the Apse |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor, Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
3 Fighters, 3 Half-Ogre Kadars, 16 Ogres,
1 Ogre Mage |
Passing through the inner door of the
Ugwearyl's temple, we see a chasm with six Ogres chained on
the opposite side, shooting arrows at us. While Hazen,
Kress, and Veracity pull out their bows, Tumulo Jumps across
and Igor and Vandis Fly - only to start falling like stones
as they cross the center, having succumbed to a Dispel Magic
Glyph on the ceiling! Veracity casts Feather Fall on Vandis
and Igor catches onto Vandis's legs. They swing Igor to the
Far Side where he starts to Climb the Wall, while Veracity
Levitates Vandis up on the near side.
Tumulo chops his way through the Ogres as Hazen, Kress, and
Veracity pepper them with arrows, and they fall. Igor
reaches the top just as the last Ogre falls, and Veracity
D-Doors across the trapped chasm, carrying the rest of the
party in Vandis's Portable Hole. Looking into the door, we
see a peculiar Blade Barrier of whirling Skulls blocking our
path.
Hazen uses his Rod of Earth and Stone to cast Pass Wall and
we enter and defeat a large party of Ogres, Half-Ogres, and
an Ogre Mage, with a few powerful human Fighters aiding them.
We search the bodies and room and find various peculiar
magical items. The one exit, however, is a forboding portal
with tendrils of dark mist seeping through the cracks.

Die, Vecna, Die! - Ravenloft: Citadel Cavitius |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor, Veracity (F+), Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis (C+) |
1 Cleric (Iuzian), 7 Minor Deaths,
1 Fighter (Lanner Kvist), 1 Fighter (Bear),
1 Fighter/Mage (Geral Kher), 12 Fingers of Vecna (Fighters),
1 Half-Ogre Kadar, 8 Ogres, 10 Orcs, 1 Orc Thief (Karhk) |
Passing through the portal, we find ourself in a misty void.
Setting off, we make some sort of progress, but towards what?
We are challenged by one Minor Death each. After defeating
them, we pass through a gate and arrive at the end of an
alley in a strange, bone-white city.
As we head towards the entrance of the alley, we are accosted
by Iuzian Ogres, led by a half-ogre. We defeat them handily
and question the one we had not slain. He tells us that we
are in the Citadel Cavitius on the Demiplane of Dread and
that Iuz is currently attacking the palace of Vecna. He says
that anyone bearing a special "hand" or "eye" and wielding
a special sword could actually kill Vecna. He says that Iuz
is planning on "eating" Vecna. We let him go free.
We pass through the city towards the palace and see various
strange things. A young woman, Valuriss of Darkon, runs up
to us and raves at us. She says that she has seen visions of
us defeating Vecna, confronting Vecna and Iuz in the throne
room. She says that we need the Sword of Kas from the
library. Since she seems to know way too much about us, we
are inclined to take her seriously, and defend her when the
city guard comes up to seize and execute her. As Valuriss
runs off, Veracity Suggests that the Captain just call off
the chase and let her and us go, and he does so.
After a couple more encounters, we are blasted by a Fireball,
as a much more potent band of Iuzians attacks us. The cleric
Withers one of Kress's arms. We kill all of their orcs and
one of the big Fighters, but when Veracity Dominates the Orc
Commander and sets him on the Fighter/Mage, the other big
Fighter picks him up and runs away, accompanied by the
Cleric, and the Fighter/Mage. We are pulled into the
adjacent house of the healer Rull, who lets us rest and heal
up, telling us that "Iuz fears only you." That night,
Valuriss appears again and tells us that Iuz is already in
the palace heading towards the throne room and will consume
Vecna unless we stop him.
We relearn our spells and Vandis Regenerates Kress's arm. We
head to the palace, first thing in the morning.

Die, Vecna, Die! - Ravenloft: Vecna's palace |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor, Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
1 Cleric (Iuzian), 1 Fighter (Lanner Kvist),
1 Fighter/Mage (Geral Kher), 1 God (Iuz), 1 God (Vecna),
1 Flesh Golem (The Eye), 1 Flesh Golem (The Hand), 32 Ogres,
1 Orc Thief (Karhk) |
We reach and enter the palace without incident. Entering by
the front gates, we are not challenged, and we proceed up the
huge winding stairs directly to the fourth floor. Passing
through a locked door, we ascend to the fifth floor, and make
our way to the base of a tower with a winding circular
staircase within it. The very stair itself is carved into
horrifying tortured sculpture. We explore various levels as
we ascend. At least, those with the beefiest amount of Hit
Points do such exploration, as the doors out of the staircase
seem to be trapped with a Power Word: Kill.
We encounter a room full of Death Knights and other Big
undead - who offer us the opportunity to go away and not
bother them. We don't argue. We open another door and find
a completely bizarre creature: a Flesh Golem made entirely of
Eyes. He, too, says that we should withdraw, or else.
Again, we gratefully accept. The party then defeated some
ogres that were about to kill a Vecnan Priestess. She thanks
us, bids us to loot the ogres and falls asleep.
When we open the next door, we find another completely
bizarre creature: a Flesh Golem made entirely of Hands. This
one appears to be friendly: he says that we have a common
goal. After helping him defeat yet more ogres, he says that
since we are here to kill the "other trespassers", he will
lead us to the library where we can arm ourselves and thence
to the confrontation in Vecna's Throne Room. He leads us
out, using the required password: "Vecna is eternal." to
bypass the trapped portals.
When we arrive at the library door, we find the Iuzian thugs
who had attacked us out in the town. They surrender and we
let them go. The Hand leads us into the library, points out
the Sword of Kas, which Veracity picks up - and bonds with.
He points out various other nice weapons for each of the
other party members, and tells us what they are - but also
comments that some of them MIGHT have curses, but he doesn't
know what they would be. He says that the Eye would know and
that he will take us to the Eye after we defeat Iuz.
He leads us up to Vecna's Throne Room where we find the
entire room awash in a swirling vortex of colors as Iuz and
Vecna are embroiled in magical combat. Iuz seems to be
wielding the Sword of Kas, and his left Eye is a red-glowing
gem. Bodies of ogres, humans, and skeletons litter the room
while quite a few ogres and a handful of humans watch the
Demigods battle. As we enter, one of the humans turns to us
and hisses: "Stay out of this!"
After quick consultation, we determine that since we are
there to stop Iuz, we may as well approach - and cut down any
who resist. Sure enough, as we try to advance, more than 20
ogres step in to impede us. Hazen surprised us all by
turning into a Vampire and life-draining an ogre. After
going gaseous, he reappears behind the human cleric and
backstabs him for an amazing amount of damage. The cleric
falls to the floor in a pile of fragmented flesh.
After we cut down all the ogres, Veracity approaches the
throne and stands watching. When Iuz broke through the last
magical barrier keeping him from Vecna, he triumphantly
raises the seeming Sword of Kas and brings it down upon
Vecna's chest, where it shatters. Iuz gapes, dumbfounded, as
Vecna stands: "Iuz, you always were feeble-minded and weak:
you inherited your father's brains and scope of vision, and
it shows." Vecna touches Iuz, who bursts into flame, as his
essence starts flowing into Vecna's empty eye socket.
Rather than Iuz "eating" Vecna, Vecna was "eating" Iuz!
One of Iuz's few remaining henchmen called out "Stop him!
Don't let Vecna get even more powerful!" Deeming this to be
a reasonable way to look at the situation, Veracity stepped
forward, and, wielding the true Sword of Kas in the Hand of
Vecna, struck Vecna for maximum damage of 22 HP, twice.
Vecna staggers back, muttering, and, clutching the gash in
his chest, directs his full attention upon her. Uttering a
potent Curse, the floor beneath Veracity opens up, and she
falls into a bottomless pit.
While the remaining party looks on, horror struck, Vecna said:
"I have won! I shall, with the help of the Serpent, remake
the Universe, as I choose. You have lost; there is nothing
you can do. Goodbye: you shall not see me again."
With a wave of his hand, all fall into a bottomless pit
(without the fancy weapons they had taken from Vecna's
library), following Veracity, and sharing her Doom.

Die, Vecna, Die! - Sigil |
Tumelo (DEAD), Kress (F9+), Igor, Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
5 Bariaurs, 1 Cleric, 5 Dabuses, 1 Fighter,
1 God (Lady of Pain), 6 Skeletal Warriors, 2 Blue Slaadi,
1 Death Slaad, 4 Green Slaadi, 1 Grey Slaad |
We fell for an eternity. Eventually, we were explosively
expelled into an ornately ornamented city. A 200 foot
wide swathe of destruction led away to a large pillar of
smoke and fire. Rather than immediately investigate, we
decided to question some of the local citizens and find an
Inn in which to rest up a bit.
We learned that the City is named Sigil, the City of
Doors. Or simply, "The Cage", to the locals. The city
is on on inside of a huge ring surrounding...what? No
"Powers" are allowed here because the Lady of Pain
doesn't allow it. But, somehow, 8 days ago, a God in the
form of a 30 foot tall "moldy old lich" named Vecna
managed to land here like a meteor. He walked through the
city destroying all he passed until he entered the Armory,
where the Doomguard used to "set up kip". Now, all the
"bloods", "bashers", "cutters", and other "high
ups" are camped out there too, as is the Lady herself.
Since Vecna's arrival, essentially all the Portals into
and out of the city have been locked down.
Kress observed that Vecna was not 30 feet tall the last
time we saw him. We spent the night at the Inn discussing
the situation and eventually sleeping.
The next morning, we relearn spells and Vandis Regenerated
Igor's finger. We made our way to the Armory where we saw
a motley army surrounding it. They were leaving a wide
zone around it, however. That zone appears to be littered
with thousands of bodies. Here and there, small intensely
black spheres dart. Whatever they touch is completely and
cleanly destroyed. These we recognize to be Spheres of
Annihilation.
The crowd appears to be leaving a perimeter around another
scene as well: the Lady of Pain and five of her Dabuses
are there, all floating several feet off the ground.
As we consider this scene, a Green Slaad comes out of the
Armory and addresses the crowd. "Vecna says: join me now,
or you will be destroyed when I remake the universe to my
whims, from the first to the last dimension." Some in the
crowd accept this proposal and enter the Armory.
We approach the Lady. Veracity and Vandis stepped boldly
into her circle, followed by the rest. She swiveled and
regarded us. As we wonder what's up, glowing columns of
glyphs started to stream from the Dabuses: the Lady's
communication to us in the form of rebuses. A local
"greybeard" steps forward and offers to translate.
"You who have incorporated parts of this God are the
first, last, and only hope of removing him. His death
ward will not stop you, nor will his divine energies burn
you. If you wish to save the warp and weft of the
multiverse as you know it, make haste."
As we make towards the Armory, a group of Vrocks and
Glabezru challenges us, demanding that we hand over the
Relics. With a glance from the Lady, they all vanish: she
has chosen her Champions and will brook no interference
with them. We do, however, allow Autochon, a beefy
fighter in grey jangling Full Plate Mail to join us.
Kress and Igor ring him with their hands as we enter the
death field and we all survive the trip across. The
Spheres of Annihilation do not target us. We boldly enter
the front - and only - entrance.
Inside we defeat six skeletal warriors and find a group of
Vecnan pilgrims, new converts, hanging out in front of a
door. We were going to pass them by when Kress, spying
the fancy Battle Axe in the hands of the big fighter, says
"that's a nice axe!" and attacks him! Many of us stand
there in astonishment, but, eventually, the more
bloodthirsty members of the party join him and the party
of Vecnans is quickly destroyed. Kress claims the Axe.
Passing through the door, a bariaur pilgrim ran up to us
and said "Come! Look at this!" Kress and Igor followed
and stepped right into an ambush of Blue and Green Slaadi
who engaged us in melee while simultaneously casting Fear
and Hold spells at us. Vandis ran away in Fear. While he
was gone, another group of Slaadi come out and attacked
us: another Green, a Gray, and a fearsome Death Slaad.
These also fiercely attacked while casting spells. Tumulo
fell dead in the first round of battle with the new foes.
The Death Slaad attacked Elvira at once and almost killed
her outright. Veracity interposed for her, fearlessly
facing the Death Slaad in melee, while Elvira took the
Blue Slaad Veracity had been in the process of slaying.
Elvira had been so grievously injured by her battle with
the Death Slaad that she took off her Animate Great Coat
and sent it in to interpose for her against the Blue
Slaad. Elvira and the Coat finished off the Slaad - but
then the Coat, apparently angry at having been sent in to
almost die, turned and attacked her, showing its true
colors: a Turncoat!
Meanwhile, although inflicting massive damage on the Death
Slaad, Veracity was repeatedly blasted by its spells: a
Flame Strike and a Phantasmal Killer. The Gray Slaad had
Blinded Igor and was also feeding him Lightning Bolts and
Flame Strikes. Several others also took Flame Strikes.
When Vandis returned, it was Kress's turn to run away.
Vandis Resurrected Tumulo, who ran away, just as Kress
returned. Vandis then Healed Igor just before the Death
Slaad went out with a bang: as he was about to fall over
dead, he cast a Ground Zero Fireball, blasting us all.
Elvira would have been ashes, save for her Magic
Resistance, but her coat was now cinders.
The party, grievously injured and all but out of healing
magic, decided to retreat and see what healing we could
obtain in Sigil.

Die, Vecna, Die! - The Armory |
Tumelo, Kress, Igor, Veracity, Hazen,
Elvira Muncid, Vandis |
1 Bariaur, 1 Cambion (Ely Cromlich), 4 Githzerais,
1 God (Vecna), 1 Golem (Eye Servitor),
1 Golem (Hand Servitor), 2 Liches, 1 Skeletal Warrior,
1 Green Slaad, 4 Spectres, 2 Tieflings |
We retreated to the entrance to the Armory, carrying the
unconscious Autochon. When we appeared at the door, the
Lady looked in our direction, frowned, and waved her hand.
Immediately, we found that we had all been Healed, granted
the effects of a Hero's Feast, and been granted a full
Ability Restoration, as well as having all our Spells
refreshed. Clearly, the Lady did not want us wasting time
seeking healing! We took the hint and immediately turned
back and re-entered the Armory.
We proceeded back through the scene of carnage where the
Slaadi had attacked us and explored all the side rooms,
finding nothing. Down a wide passage, we faced large
double doors. Igor and Kress opened them while the others
stayed back - far back, in some cases. Thus, only those
two were affected by the Delayed Blast Fireball that had
entrapped the door.
Passing through, we found ourselves in a large circular
hallway. At the first door we attempted to open, a
Spectre attacked us stealthily from each direction,
draining Autochon of two life energy levels before being
defeated. In the room, we found a vast store of weapons.
Finding nothing of interest after a turn of searching, we
decided to leave the room, for now.
Opening other doors, we found broken weapons, and siege
engines and such - and a large room with a shattered Vault
door guarding it. The room was empty, but Vandis's True
Seeing revealed that there were two secret doors. Each
was trapped with a deadly poison needle and was guarded by
a Spectre. We dealt with all such hazards without harm
and claimed the treasures secreted within: from the first,
a Blue Light Crossbow, cold to the touch, and from the
other, a Spear with shaft carved with flames and the head
in the form of a flame. Each seemed likely to be highly
magical, and they were packed away in the Portable Hole.
Smashed double doors leading inward from the circular
hallway led us to a strange sight: the walls were lined
with workbenches, but from a wide pit in the center of the
room, a strange column of spectral flame rose. A circular
stairway descended perilously along the walls of the pit.
We all opted to fly down over this stairway to the bottom,
which the final vestiges of Vandis's True Seeing revealed
to be 100 feet below. As we descended this Stairway of
Wonder, we were all affected in beneficial or baneful
ways. Veracity and Elvira each were enabled to cast an
additional spell per level, an especially potent effect
for Elvira, given her dual Magical and Clerical powers.
Veracity also had her strength boosted to level of a
powerful Giant. Tumulo, on the other hand, became even
more clumsy. Igor and Vandis resisted some sort of death
effect and merely took some damage. The others in the
party presumably had similar effects cast upon them, but
if so, they were more subtle, as nothing was evident.
At the bottom, we found a wide hallway. The walls were
carved with many scenes depicting the high (or low) points
of Vecna's career. Five tieflings stood there admiring
these and greeted us as fellow pilgrims. We all stood and
studied the artwork before deciding to move on. Veracity
was aching to destroy them and hopefully boost both her
and Igor's vitality in the process, but Vandis marched us
sternly past.
After turning left at the end of the hallway, we came up
to a small room resembling the reliquaries we had looted
long ago in the Adytum. In this one was a Golden Eye.
Hazen looked at this covetously, but the rest of us
decided that since we didn't wish to try inserting any
such object, we should move on.
We passed through a door into an Art Gallery. The rugs
were of sumptuous Selkie Fur, there were tapestries
painted on leather, and sculptures carved of unicorn horn.
In fact, all of the art appeared to have been created from
the body parts of innocent creatures. Hazen rhapsodized
over the creativity involved, while Vandis gagged and
again, forced us to move on.
The next room had a Chalice containing a glowing pearly
white liquid smelling of caramel. On the floor, on large
pillows, various people were lying comatose. Each had a
golden Hand and Eye. We debated whether we should attempt
to sample some of this liquid. We agreed that an Augury
would surely be appropriate before attempting that, but we
felt it was unlikely to be the best use for our single
available Augury spell. We moved on.
The next room had a pit in the floor emitting an odorous
smoke. On benches along the walls, drooling people sat,
having the appearance of being drugged. Most of the party
immediately crossed the room and opened the door, while
Veracity hung back, claiming she had some "business" in
the preceding room. Hazen and Elvira stayed with her
while Vandis resolutely covered his eyes and marched on
through.
Through the far door, two Liches accompanied by a Skeletal
Warrior demanded that the party assert Vecna's dominance.
The party dallied irresolutely before some of them finally
gave a weak response, at which point the Liches, who were
clearly not convinced, attacked. The Skeletal Warrior
held off our fighters while the Liches cast Mirror Images
and started to Fly. Igor flew over and attacked one,
while the other fighters fought through the Warrior and
then stood in dismay, looking up at the flying Lich, who
pointed at Kress and hit him with a Finger of Death, which
Kress, fortunately, shrugged off.
Vandis, thinking quickly, pulled out the Flail we had
taken from the mad cleric in the library in the Adytum and
used its two Flame Strikes to take out the Mirror Images
of first one and then the other Lich.
Meanwhile, in the Chalice room, Veracity had invigorated
herself by draining 39 Hit Points from two of the comatose
people using Vampiric Touches. She and Elvira then joined
the rest of the party. As Vandis dispelled the Fly spell
on one of the Liches, and Veracity wore down his Stone
Skin with a magic Missile, he cast a Chain Lightning at
us. He was surprised when Tumulo's ring of Spell Turning
reflected some of it back to him and his fellow Lich - and
onto Igor.
Igor, meanwhile, had been wearing down the other Lich's
Stone Skin, and shrugging off fearsome spells such as
Prismatic Spray, Lightning, and a Fireball which blasted
all of us - but did not affect him inside his Globe of
Invulnerability.
After the no-longer-flying Lich was quickly polished off
by the earthbound fighters and Veracity's second Magic
Missile spell, his Stone Skin having dropped, Vandis and
Veracity flew up and joined Igor, who had just dropped the
other Lich's Stone Skin. He, too, fell in a single round
of attacks by our combined swords.
While Vandis and Elvira cured up the various injured party
members, Hazen and Veracity went back to take care of some
business in earlier-visited rooms: they collected all the
portable unicorn-horn sculptures from the Art Gallery, and
they harvested a few Golden Hands from the comatose
Vecnans lying in the Chalice room.
When they returned, the refreshed party proceeded through
the double doors in the center of the hall. The room had
a pair of singing marble statues: one in the form of The
Hand, and one in the form of The Eye. Although they were
continually singing hymns to Vecna, no harm seemed to
befall us by hearing them.
Veracity broke through the locked double doors with the
strength of a Storm Giant. We found that the next room
was a lush, but empty, chapel to Vecna. On the Altar were
many scrolls, all of which Veracity loaded into her pack.
From this room led a huge door of Light, 10 feet wide and
30 feet tall. We performed an Augury before attempting
this door and were told, in essence, that "This is it!"
So, we prepared our battle plan and cast many spells to
beef ourselves up, including Defensive Harmony, Prayer,
Recitation, and Haste.
Upon touching the door, it dissolved, and we saw a huge
chapel beyond with a large man preaching to a motley
collection of pilgrims: Githzerai, Tieflings, a Bariaur
and a Slaad. To each side stood seeming Golems in the
form of The Hand and The Eye.
As we entered, the crystal backdrop to the central pulpit
became transparent and a loud shriek burst forth as the 30
foot tall Vecna called out: "Get them! Tear my holy relics
from their profane bodies!" The crystal barrier shattered
and all the fighting-class pilgrims rushed up to engage
us, as did the Hand Golem. Our Fighters rushed to destroy
them, and Veracity started to conjure.
To the side, Autochon knelt and said: "Remove this
accursed ringing from my ears and I shall serve you,
Vecna!" He then stood and attacked Tumulo from behind.
We beat off the first wave of Vecnans, killing many of
them. The Cambion who had been preaching to us cast a
Mirror Image upon himself, Veracity Lowered Resistance on
Vecna himself - and Vecna attempted powerful spells upon
Veracity and Kress, which simply washed over us as if we
were immune. The Lady had been right - Vecna's Divine
Energies could not burn us!
We fought off more minions and Veracity again Lowered
Resistance upon Vecna. The treacherous Autochon did
substantial damage upon Tumulo before finally falling,
when the Vampiric Hazen backstabbed him into oblivion.
Powerful Igor slew the Eye Golem.
Her spells done, Veracity flew up to Vecna and attacked
him in melee using the Sword of Kas on Maximum Offense.
She hit him twice for substantial damage and he removed
two layers of Stone Skin from her - and simultaneously
resurrected two of his fallen minions!
Kress began to find himself Over his Head as both the
Cambion (an 18th level fighter!) and The Hand attacked him
for a lot of damage. Hazen attacked the Cambion from
behind and drained 2 Life Energy Levels from him, Veracity
hit Vecna 4 times for massive damage, and in return, lost
two more layers of Stone Skin, with Vecna additionally
hasting some of his own minions. Kress fell!
In the next round of battle, Hazen drained two more levels
from the Cambion as Tumulo stepped in to battle him while
Vandis Healed Kress with a scroll. Veracity hit Vecna 3
more times, bobbling once, and lost two more layers of
Stone Skin, as Vecna also Resurrected The Eye golem. Poor
Tumulo fell dead, with massive blows from the Cambion as
well as a potent Critical Strike from one of the Tieflings.
Then, when Elvira had finally defeated HER Tiefling, she
attempted a Flame Strike on Vecna - the first person other
than Veracity to actually attempt to afflict the god
himself. Unfortunately, he Resisted it completely. He
did NOT resist Veracity's 4 mighty slashes, however. He
removed Veracity's last layer of Stone Skin and hit her,
once, only to fall. He shrieked, "You will pay, you
puny..." as he got sucked into a strange portal which
opened behind him and vanished.
Veracity floated there, gaping in astonishment. Her party
quickly polished off the remaining Vecnans and, when we
noticed that the whole lower level of the Armory seemed to
be collapsing, we quickly picked up the Cambion's, Eye's,
and Autochons's swords and booked it out of there.
When we reached the Stairway of Wonder, Veracity scooped
up Elvira, and with the gaseous Hazen having seeped into
her backpack, she Dimension Doored straight to the top.
Everybody else was flown up and affected in various ways
by the staircase.
The lower level of the Armory collapsed, as the Lady
removed it and all other modifications Vecna had made, but
we had escaped. As we left the Armory, the Lady spied us
and Resurrected Tumulo. We returned to our Inn to unwind.
After we'd been there a while, a contingent of Dabuses
came and gave us three rewards from the Lady. She assured
us that she had nullified Vecna's vengeance: that he would
not seek to harm us in the future, unless we went out of
our way to annoy him. She gave us a Key to City of Doors,
which would allow us to make 3 permanent Portals between
locations of our choice in Sigil and on a remote Plane.
And, she gave us the deed to a fine dwelling in the Lady's
Ward, on the corner of Palace Street and Lord's Row, near
the border with the bustling Market District. Simply
being noticed by the Lady, much less rewarded, was an
unheard of honor.
We withdrew to our new dwelling and, after several weeks,
returned to Mansfield. The Avatar of Shina-Tsu-Hiko who
had sent us on this quest initially came to us and offered
each of us a Full Wish, guaranteed to work as we intended.
